Warcry Competitive Tournament
Adepticon 2023
Tournament Summary:
AdeptiCon is one of the largest hobby conventions in North America, and hosts many of the biggest tournament events in the Warhammer calendar. It took place on March 22nd to 26th in Schaumburg, Illinois. It also hosts to all sorts of fantastic Warhammer hobby events and activities, not least of which is the prestigious Golden Demon painting competition.Â
There were 2 Warcry events at Adepticon this year, one Competitive, and one with a more laid-back Narrative focus.Â
The competitive event featured just under 30 participants (28), and consisted of 4 games with a Swiss-Pairing tournament format.
4 missions were selected from the Core Book Matched Play Missions and from the Gnarlwood Rumble Pack. The Missions selected were Power Struggle (Gnarlwood), Reaper (Core Book), Loot and Pillage (Gnarlwood), and Ley Lines (Core Book).
The Winner of the Event was my first opponent, Dan H. from the Salty Sea Youtube channel, with his Nurgle Daemons + Chimera list.
I went 2-1-1 and placed 11th out of 30 which was pretty good for the first tournament!Â
You can find photos I took of the event in the gallery down bellow and game summaries in the tabs above.
My list for the Tournament was Seraphon, with a nice 10 fighter list with a mix of both tough, hard hitting and fast units.
Saurus Eternity Warden – 190pts (Leader)
Razordon – 145pts
4 Saurus Warriors w/ Spear – 360pts
3 Skink Handlers – 210pts
1 Chamelion Skink Alpha (Ally) – 90pts
Total – 995pts
Overall I was very pleased with this list. Tearing Bite on the Eternity Warden is extremely powerful, as is the Razordon Hunting pack double which gives extra attacks. The Saurus are solid fighters who can also use tearing bite, and the skinks are very nice mobility pieces. It’s a highly flexible warband that can do a bit of everything, with clear roles for each fighter. Maybe going another Saurus warrior instead of the Chamelion Skink Alpha ally would’ve been better. The Hurled Bolas ability is nice, however when you have Tearing bite you are using that almost every time instead. The Handlers are clear in their role as quick objective grabbers and support whereas the Alpha is caught in between wanting to fight but not wanting to fight. Another Saurus warrior would’ve been another solid fighter to have more survivability.Â
Power Struggle vs Nurgle Daemons
My first game was against Nurgle Daemons, piloted by Dan H. (from the Salty Sea Youtube channel, the essential resource on Youtube for everything Warcry. He ended up placing first in the tournament. We played Power Struggle from the Gnarlwood Rumble Pack.
Game Result: Major Loss
Nurgle Daemons:
Sloppity Bilepiper – 130pts (Leader)
Nurglings – 105
Plaguebearers x 5 – 350pts
Chimera – 515pts
Total: 1000pts
Shield: Sloppity Bilepiper, 3 Plaguebearers
Hammer: Chimera
Dagger: Nurglings + 2 Plaguebearers

Summary of Game:Â
Major Win for Dan, Major Loss for me.
Highlights: Chamelion Skink Alpha Hurled Bolas successful on Chimera. However Chimera goes on to take out a Saurus Warrior, the CSA, the Razordon, and overall half of my warband by itself.
1st Turn: Only the shield comes on in turn one and we both deployed and moved onto 2 objectives each.
2nd Turn:Â Our daggers deploy first and then our hammers. My razordon comes on before his Chimera crucially and he deploys outside of the razordon’s threat range. There’s always a crucial decision in a game vs. a Chimera where you have to decide if you want to go after it and take it out or try to avoid it and go for the rest of the warband. I chose the latter after the deployment groups came in.
A key part of his win was the ability to deploy his Chimera within attacking distance of my Saurus Warrior on one of the objectives and was therefore able to attack it straight away and kill it outright.
I then activated my allied-in Hunter of Huanchi Chamelion Skink Alpha. I had rolled a double 6 crucially so I decided that I would try to use Hurled Bolas [Triple] to remove 1 valuable action from the Chimera. I rolled 6 dice, one of them fell on the ground and was still spinning. The other 5 had not showed a six. I picked up the spinning dice on the ground before it settled, and rolled it by itself, and the 6 I was looking for showed up, huge moment!
A mistake on my part actually was putting the Chamelion Skink Alpha within 6″of the Chimera unneccescarily, as Hurled Bolas has an 8″ range, which then unfortunately became the second helping for the Chimera who promplty used Drag and Maul [Triple] and which killed the skink outright. That left the Chimera over on that side of the board but it had done enough to secure an objective and take out 2 90pt units in only 2 activations out of 3.
3rd and 4th Turns: My Eternity Warden and Saurus warriors take out enough plague bearers to gain a hold of an objective but ultimately it wasn’t enough to shake off the nurglings and Bilepiper to gain control of the other objectives. Since the Chimera had taken out so much of my warband I couldn’t go and claim them. Overall very fun game and just tough the way everything played out to have been able to do much against the Chimera, as the Drag and Maul has such a long reach that it’s hard to set up any sort of traps or counter charges to it.
Reaper vs Darkoath Savagers (w/ Godsworn Hunt Bladeborn)
My second game was vs Darkoath Savagers, piloted by James J. He had a list that combined Darkoath Savagers with the Godsworn Hunt. James was a great opponent, really great guy.
Game Result: Major Win
Darkoath Savagers:
Slaughterborn with Greataxe: 180ptsÂ
Gloryseeker with Paired Weapons x 4 = 280pts
Godsworn Hunt:
Theddra Skull-Scryer: 180 points
Ollo: 110 points
Jagathra: 75 points
Grawl: 75 points
Thrall:
Fury -95pts
Total = 995pts
Summary:Â
Major Win for Me, Major Loss for James.
This was a great game, against a list that had 10 fighters with decent hitting power but not great defensively, so it suffered if it couldn’t get the attacks in first. He didn’t take any Proven which I think have the more impressive statlines in the faction.Â
I killed the Fury first turn with my razordon, which is crucial in Reaper, as usually the first turn is a bit of a positioning stalemate. That set me up well for the rest of the game, and I ended up wiping almost his entire warband. With only maximum toughness 4 across the board and no defensive abilities, apart from a decent reaction, I was able to chew through almost all of his warband.
Really fun game overall and James was a fantastic opponent and I was happy to play him again the next day, really great guy.Â
Loot and Pillage vs Ogor Mawtribes
My third round game was against Jason from Tabletop and Beyond, a great channel that has both Youtube and Spotify. What a great match and a great opponent.Â
Game Result: Draw
His list was:Â
Tyrant – 315pts (Leader)
Irongut – 235pts
Gorger – 195ptsÂ
Bushwakka -40pts
Mange – 55pts
Brewgit – 70pts
Gnoblar – 45pts
Gnoblar – 45pts
 Total = 1000pts
Game Result = Draw
1st Turn
Jason uses Bushwakka to lay a trap right on the main center treasure. Knowing that I needed to get there, I ran my Saurus warrior up to spring the trap and Jason rolled a 5 and 6 to get 11 damage on my Warrior, almost killing it outright.Â
The game went back and forth and ended in a draw.Â
Highlights included his Irongut taking out a few warriors and my Eternity Warden taking down his Tyrant! I had a triple 6 Tearing bite which I rolled a crit and a regular hit, totalling 12+9 damage, 21 damage to his Tyrant in one attack action, which completely took him off guard! Â
Ley Lines vs Stormcast Eternals, Thunderstrike
My fourth round game was against Jacob Z piloting Stormcast Eternals, playing Ley Lines from the core book.
Result: Minor Win
Stormcast Eternals, Thunderstrike:
Lord Imperatant – 240ptsÂ
Praetor – 160pts
Annihilator with Meteroic Hammer and Shield – 130pts
Vanquisher – 140pts
Vigilor – 165pts
Vigilor – 165pts
Total = 1000pts
Result: Minor Win
Because Ley Lines was an objective mission, I had the advantage with 10 fighters vs his 6 fighters. They key to the battle was isolating his Annihilator so it was ineffectual most of the battle. I rolled misses on a crucial Tearing bite, otherwise it would have likely been a major win for me.Â
Good game and overall great tournament!
